Five days after she was injured in a Montreal fight, a Mexican female boxer passed away, this Thursday. The organizer of the boxing event, Groupe Yvon Michel, said that Jeanette Zacarias Zapata (18 years old) died after she was injured in a fight with MariePier Houle at IGA Stadium on Saturday night.

Zapata was subject to a series of power punches in her corner. The Mexican appeared stunned at the end of the fourth round. Zapata’s final right hook caused her mouthguard to fly out, rendering her unable to return her corner after the bell rang.

Jovanni Martinez, Zapata’s trainer, and partner joined her in convulsing while standing. She quickly laid Zapata down in the ring. She was quickly immobilized by the onsite medical team and taken to the hospital via ambulance.

Yvon Michel, president of Groupe Yvon Michel, stated in a briefing Sunday Zapata was in a medically induced coma in order to relax her brain and sedate her. He also said that the next two to five days would prove crucial.
