He was also at the center of controversy on a day that saw Cristiano Ronaldo break the all-time record for international goalscoring with his 110th Portugal goal, and score an injury-time winner to save his country’s dramatic 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over the Republic of Ireland.
Ireland Missed Penalty
After Ireland had misplaced a penalty in their own area, Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo’s Portugal teammate, was brought down by Jeff Hendrick.
The penalty was awarded after a long VAR review. Ronaldo was about to kick the penalty. O’Shea, a West Brom player, rolled the ball off the spot. O’Shea appeared to hit O’Shea’s right arm. However, the incident went unpunished.
Ronaldo’s day was worse than ever when Ronaldo’s spot kick was saved from him by Gavin Bazunu (a teenage goalkeeper on loan at English third-tier side Portsmouth, Manchester City).
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner said, “It’s part the game, part the business.” “Sometimes you score and sometimes you make mistakes.”
Ronaldo was visibly frustrated in this match. Ireland took a surprise lead in the first period. Egan, the centre-back, leapt high to see a header into the far corner.

Portugal started brightly in the second half, but Ireland almost doubled their lead. Brighton’s forward Connolly scored wide under pressure from Joao Pahinha, and his penalty appeals for an apparent nudge at the back were thrown out.
Predictably, the Euro 2016 champions increased the pressure in the final 30 minutes. Bernardo Silva was blazing across from seven yards away. Bazunu saved Ronaldo’s free kick from the box’s edge, but Ronaldo scored a header into his own net seconds later.
James McClean nearly scored all three points for Ireland, but his shot was blocked by Patricio. With the five minutes of injury time played, Ronaldo crossed with Joao Mario with a towering header. Ronaldo was scheduled for the celebration, and Portugal’s next qualifier against Azerbaijan will be missed by suspension.
